STATCOM - Static Synchronous Compensator

A STATCOM is a modern and extremely fast dynamic reactive power compensation solution that improves voltage stability and power quality in medium- and high-voltage grids in real time. Unlike traditional capacitor and reactor solutions, a STATCOM is based on power electronics, which enables stepless and instantaneous reactive power control under all grid load conditions.

A STATCOM responds within milliseconds to voltage fluctuations, load variations, and disturbances, making it an ideal solution for grids with frequent rapid dynamic changes—such as in industrial applications, renewable energy connections, and critical power distribution sites.

Key Benefits of a STATCOM:

  • Extremely fast voltage stabilization
  • Stepless and precise reactive power control
  • Excellent performance, even at low voltage levels
  • Reduction of harmonic distortion (with optional filters)
  • Improvements to the network’s transmission capacity and reliability
  • Support for the integration of renewable energy and prevention of voltage fluctuations
  • A STATCOM is a next-generation power quality solution that combines the flexibility of power electronics with grid stability

Battery operation

An inductive compensation bank consists of appropriate compensation stages, just like the more familiar detuned capacitor bank. Whereas the main component in a detuned capacity bank is a capacitor, the inductive compensation bank has a specially manufactured coil or reactor. A suitable combination of small (5 kvar), medium (10 kvar), and large (15 kvar) inductive compensation stages is selected for the inductive compensation bank. The compensation stages are controlled by a regulator that switches them on or off as needed at any given moment.

Typical inductive compensation banks
